"Shokoku no Altair," a historical fantasy manga by Kotono Kano, will be adapted into an anime television series and will premiere in 2017. The series will be re-titled as "Project Altair" when it officially launches in the West.
According to Anime News Network, the series will be helmed by director Kazuhiro Furuhashi. He has previously worked on "Getbackers," "Rurouni Kenshin" and the "Mobile Suit Gundam UC" OVA. He will be working with renowned MAPPA, an anime studio that worked on "Yuri!!! on Ice" and "Kids on the Slope."
"Project Altair" centers on a young man named Mahmut, a Pasha and member of the Türkiye Stratocracy council. However, the council is divided between pacifists and warmongers. Mahmut, as the youngest military leader, attempts to keep hold of peace even when country is on the edge of war.
The series originally launched in the Monthly Shonen Sirius magazine, published by Kodansha, back in 2007. The 17th compiled book volume was released in Japan back in March and the 18th volume is scheduled to release on Jan. 17, 2017.
It is still uncertain how faithful the anime adaptation will be. It is also uncertain which plot arc from the manga the anime will follow. In comparison, the "Attack on Titan" anime adapts approximately four story arcs from the manga per season.
A spin-off series titled "Shokoku no Altair-san" or "Altair of the Tiny Nation" ran from 2012 to 2013. A second spin-off series titled "Shokoku no Altair Kaiden Tokoku no Subaru," created by Chika Kato and Hirokazu Kobayashi, launched in January.
For the Japanese release, Ayumu Murase will be portraying Tughril Mahmut, Makoto Furukawa will voice Zehir Zaganos, KENN will voice Cyrus, Katsuyuki Konishi will be voicing Kara Kanat Suleyman and Kenjiro Tsuda will voice Virgilio Louis, according to Crunchyroll.
