AMD is killing it in both the CPU and the GPU fronts as their new products certainly exceeds the expectations especially the Vega specs. The Ryzen and Vega setup shown at CES 2017 should make Intel and NVIDIA fan boys swoon.
NVIDIA mainly dominated the high-end GPU market in 2016 thanks to their Pascal architecture. Their GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 were met with only with AMD's Polaris-powered RX 480 and below which were targeted towards the mainstream market instead.
Vega specs, price and release dates were not unveiled at CES 2017 but its potential was demonstrated for onlookers. AMD set their Vega demonstration rig to run "Doom" at 4K with the specialized Vulkan API, PC Perspective has learned .
Astonishingly, the new rig from AMD was able to churn out around 70 frames per second at the demanding resolution. The NVIDIA GTX 1080, which is considered to be the top-end card next to the expensive Titan X, can only average around 60 frames per second.
Since the AMD Vega rig is still running with pre-release drivers, there are some expected bugs in the experience. The "Doom" 4K demo went as low as 37 frames per second while it was stuttering. It is expected that the stutters will be minimized once the RX 500 or the new video card is finally released.
AMD Vega specs include 8GB of VRAM which is expected to be HBM or High Bandwidth Memory, WCCFTech reported. It may be named the RX 490 or the RX 500 since it would be a step up from the current Polaris GPU architecture.
Compared to the RX 480, the new Vega video card will have more stream processors and peak performance. However, it will also run with a TDP almost double the Polaris cards.
AMD Vega release date is expected to be revealed soon considering that it is already Q1 2017. The pricing will also play a huge factor in its battle for supremacy against the NVIDIA GTX 1080 or even the GTX 1080 Ti.
