The final episode of "Sherlock" Season 4 featured a plot that showed a different side of the titular hero and an ending that hinted of new beginnings. Despite the lack of information about the BBC show's extension, showrunner Steven Moffat recently shared some of his ideas for a potential Season 5 run.
"Sherlock" Season 4 ended its three-episode run in the U.K. with a finale that addressed many of the cliffhangers in the BBC show. The final episode titled "The Final Problem" gave viewers a look at Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Sheen) resuming their normal lives after a harrowing investigation that delved into the iconic sleuth's childhood and emotional trauma.
However, the future of the BBC detective series remains unknown although showrunner Moffat recently shared some of his thoughts on a potential "Sherlock" Season 5 run. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he commented that the Season 4 finale gave them an opportunity to easily continue the series should they decide to come back for another season.
Moffat shared, "There isn't [any cliffhangers] ... we have to come back to address. Which is quite good for us. Because if we do come back, we can just start with a knock on the door and a new client, and they can go and investigate."
The showrunner also echoed a similar sentiment in an interview with Radio Times where he stated that a Season 5 extension would likely feature Sherlock and Watson continuing their sleuthing activities and solving one crime after another.
When asked whether "Sherlock" Season 4 served as the BBC show's final season, Moffat mentioned that they had no plans of ending the detective series with the said season. However, he also teased that Season 4 could also possibly mark the end of the series.
The "Sherlock" Season 4 finale was released in the U.K. on Jan. 15, Sunday. Watch a teaser clip for the BBC series below:
