Netflix's "The Defenders" is arguably this year's most highly-awaited series. The show brings together a quartet of heroes from Marvel's stable: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. The show is expected to be as action-packed as ever, as it takes cues from Charlie Hunnam's "Sons of Anarchy" series.
All individual Marvel shows on Netflix have a different flavor and aesthetic. When asked if any one of the shows will dominate for "The Defenders," showrunner Marco Ramirez told Entertainment Weekly that the tone of "The Defenders" is inspired by a non-Marvel show.
"My first TV job was on 'Sons of Anarchy,' and that show really tended to run and gun, and you picked up with adrenaline every episode and ended with adrenaline, so to me, that feels like what we want to do with these eight [episodes of 'The Defenders,']" Ramirez said.
With only eight episodes in the "The Defenders" Season 1, the show is going to be anything but fast paced. And given that it will center on four main protagonists with different personalities and abilities, the show must be able to give the spotlight equally to all characters the same way "Sons of Anarchy" did to its ensemble.
Meanwhile, actress Krysten Ritter, who plays Jessica Jones, reveals that the four heroes in "The Defenders" form a rather reluctant team. Especially for her character Jessica Jones, she forms a "cat-and-mouse" dynamic with Charlie Cox's Matthew Murdock/Daredevil.
"It switches back and forth, to be honest. No one's best friends in all of the Defenders. This is a reluctant team-up," Ritter told Entertainment Weekly.
"The Defenders" also ties in with the events in "Jessica Jones" Season 1, especially since the show will deal with how Jessica struggles with the attention she's getting from having defeated Kilgrave.
"She's still dealing with success - and not well. People want her to work for them, she's getting a lot of business and she's not ready for any of them," Ritter added.
Meanwhile, before "The Defenders" premieres in Netflix this summer, fans will get to see the debut of "Iron Fist" on March 17.
