The popular crime-drama "Major Crimes" from Warner Bros. TV has been renewed for Season 6 at TNT, the network announced Wednesday. The renewal comes well before the second half of Season 5 returns on Feb. 22.
According to Deadline, the order for "Major Crimes" Season 6 will consist of 13 episodes, down for recent years. The show was launched with a 10-episode in Season 1 and had been producing between 19 and 23 episodes in Season 2-5. However, it had started off with 13-episode orders in the last couple of seasons, which had expanded with back orders.
"Major Crimes" follows a special squad within the Los Angeles Police Department that deals with the high-profile or particularly sensitive crimes, Variety reported. "The Closer" Oscar-nominated actress Mary McDonnell leads the squad as Captain Sharon Raydor. The squad includes Lieutenant Provenza ("The Closer" actor G.W. Bailey), Lieutenant Andy Flynn ("Crime Story" actor Tony Denison), Lieutenant Michael Tao ("Spy Game" actor Michael Paul Chan), Detective Julio Sanchez ("Training Day" actor Raymond Cruz), tech expert and reserve officer Buzz Watson ("I Am Death" actor Phillip P. Keene), and Detective Amy Sykes ("22 Years" actress Kearran Giovanni).
In the upcoming episodes of "Major Crimes" Season 6, the squad led by McDonnell's character Captain Raydor will move inexorably to fill the vacant assistant chief post that Fritz Howard ("The Seagull" actor Jon Tenney) has been temporarily filling. The vacant position is what Captain Raydor is considered to create tension within the department, whether she likes it or not.
Collaborating on many of their cases in "Major Crimes" is medical examiner Dr. Morales ("NCIS" actor Jonathan Del Arco). The squad's work has also become a source of inspiration for Rusty ("Impastor" actor Graham Patrick Martin), Sharon Raydor's adopted son, who hopes one day to have a career as a lawyer.
James Duff created "Major Crimes" and executive produced with Greer Shephard and Michael M. Robin, Mike Berchem, Rick Wallace, Duppy Demetrius, and Adam Belanoff. The Shephard/Robin Company and Walking Entropy, Inc. in association with Warner Bros. Television will also produce.
"Major Crimes" is originally a spinoff from TNT's hit drama "The Closer," pulling in 10 million viewers a week across all platforms. It is the network's No. 1 series in total viewers and has consistently ranked as one of cable's most-watched drama series since its breakout debut in 2012. Season 5 returns for an eight-episode second part on Feb. 22, with the season finale marking the franchise's 200th episode.
