The "Terminator" franchise has not fared well in recent years, with the past three movies critically and commercially failing. A sixth movie is now in the works but this time it has been confirmed that series creator James Cameron will be on board to godfather the project.
Cameron will not be directing the sixth film, Deadline reported. Instead, that responsibility will fall to the hands of "Deadpool" director Tim Miller. The movie is also stated to be both a reboot and a conclusion to the current saga.
No casting has yet been announced. Series lead star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has yet to announce if he is reprising his role. Schwarzenegger has appeared in four of the five current films. Roland Kickinger portrayed a young Schwarzenegger in "Terminator Salvation."
Emilia Clarke, who played Sarah Conner in the previous movie "Terminator: Genisys," already confirmed she would not be returning for future films. If the character makes an appearance in the next film it is more than likely the role will be recast.
The studios are also looking for major science fiction writers, Cinema Blend reported. This would indicate Paramount is aiming to form a writers room similar to what was done for the new "Transformers" movie. It is still uncertain if this means a "Terminator" Cinematic Universe is being planned.
A proper sequel to the film was originally planned, with Clarke returning, but this was dropped after "Genisys" failed to reach its expected box office success. Paramount removed "Terminator 6" from their upcoming release schedule.
Cameron was responsible for creating the franchise. He wrote and directed the first movie in the series, which then released in 1984. The director would return to pen and helm the more successful sequel in 1992. He is also responsible for directing films such as "Aliens," "Titanic" and "Avatar."
No official release date for "Terminator 6" has yet been announced. The trailer for the most recent entry in the franchise can be viewed below:
