Chinese President Xi Jinping recently visited Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province and encouraged the organizers to host an extraordinary Winter Olympics on 2022. He stressed that the preparations should have rational planning and economic use of resources.
Zhangjiakou will be Beijing's co-host city for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The Chinese head of state listened to a briefing on preparatory work and inspected the proposed venue areas.
"There should be clear positioning of this region for future development. Rather than developing into a large-scale comprehensive metropolitan area, Chongli should be built into a ski destination with a strong local character," stressed Xi.
China is no stranger in hosting international games. It hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics. Beijing will be the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Games.
Winter Sports Becoming Popular in China
Apart from hosting a successful Olympics on 2022, China is determined to become a winter sports powerhouse over the course of the next decade.
It's been a full year since China was awarded the hosting of the 2022 Winter Olympics, winter sports have risen in popularity since last year. With preparations now in full swing, it is expected that these sports will become more popular among the general public.
"Among the three gold medals claimed by China in Sochi 2014, two were snatched by Jilin athletes. As the Beijing Winter Olympic Games approach, China should step up its efforts to train successors to its medalists at previous editions of the Games," said Li Jianrou, a short-track speed skating medalist in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
During its bid for the 2022 Olympics, China promised it would attract as many as 300 million people to take part in winter sports.
With China already preparing five years ahead, it will surely be able to achieve its goal of hosting an extraordinary and unforgettable Winter Olympics.
