Even though Apple's newest MacBook is not set to ship until next month many accessory manufacturer are already scrambling their resources in order to gain traction for the upcoming USB-C connector. On top of this is LaCie which recently announced that it is developing a mobile drive that uses USB-C.
LaCie is the luxury division of Seagate; the company specializes in the manufacturing of premium and artistically designed external hard drives. LaCie announced on Tuesday that it will be releasing a MacBook-friendly Mobile Drive with Porsche inspired design and will be use the USB-C connector. The company added that the product will be available by next quarter.
The hard drive will be available in three models based on its storage capacity; 500Gigabyte, 1Terabyte and 2Terabyte. The hard drive will be made out of aluminum and will sport the sleek aesthetic present in Porsche Design. According to LaCie, the new hard drive will have data transfer speed equivalent to that of a USB 3.0 speed.
Although the hard drive is primarily designed for USB-C port, LaCie will include an adaptor in order for the device to have USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 capability. This means that aside from being Macbook-ready, the device will also have backwards compatibility. It will also support both Mac OS X and Windows platform.
According to the official LaCie website, the 500GB model has a dimension of 79x128x11 mm and weighs 182 grams. The 1Terabyte and 2Terabyte model has a dimension of 77x130x15 mm and weighs 240grams.
LaCie has yet to release the device's official price range but based on the current devices available on the market it will fetch somewhere around $99, according to Mashable.
