Current WWE Universal champion Kevin Owens spent nearly 15 years wrestling for independent promotions before he made his way to the WWE. Throughout his journey in the world of professional wrestling, he said he has dreamt multiple times of holding WWE gold.
Owens joined WWE's NXT promotion after wrestling in others such as Combat Zone Wrestling and Pro Wrestling Guerilla since the age of 16. He then made his debut on the WWE main roster back in May 2015 and has since not looked back, winning two Intercontinental titles as well as the Universal championship he is currently holding. He has also shared storylines with big names in the industry such as John Cena and Roman Reigns.
"In the last two years, I've got to live things that some people in this company take seven or eight years to live, or some guys never get to experience," Owens told USA Today in an exclusive interview. He stated that the speed at which he achieved success in the WWE has definitely helped make up for the over-a-decade wait. He added that wrestling for 14 years before receiving his first WWE contract definitely helped him prepare for the opportunities he was given.
While Owens has accomplished a lot for a considerably young wrestler, he has also revealed his intentions to win a tag team championship, as he has not yet won one before. He will not be participating in the 30-man Royal Rumble event on Jan. 29 due to his scheduled title defense, but has expressed his desire to win it one day. He stated that he would also love a crack at the WWE World championship in addition to headlining WrestleMania.
Owens' upcoming title defense against Reigns will give him the chance to show off his skills as a veteran of the sport. Owens has amassed an arguably disappointing 12-9 record since becoming champion and a number of his recent wins have been in part to the interferences of his compatriot Chris Jericho, What Culture reported. With Jericho being suspended from a shark cage on the rafters while Reigns and Owens duke it out, it will be a chance for the latter to prove that he is still well deserving of his current standing.
