"Tiny Times III," helmed by Chinese writer-turned-director Guo Jingmin, recently received a "Most Disappointing Film" nomination from the Golden Broom Awards, China's version of the Golden Raspberry Awards.
The nomination came amid the film's gross revenue of 500 million yuan ($800,000) at the box office. The movie also earned a number of bad reviews from various film critics.
According the organizers of the award-giving body, the 2015 edition of the contest will take place despite the current "most shameless, uncreative and dreadful" time in the Chinese film history.
Through this contest, the Golden Broom Awards organizers ask the public to choose this year's worst motion pictures.
The movie "Tiny Times III" is inspired by Guo's popular young adult trilogy. The story depicts the coming-of-age adventures of four Shanghai-based fashionable, college ladies.
According to the writer-director's avid followers, Guo is able to represent the new material-minded generation. However, his latest film still got the ire of movie critics.
Based on the reviews, "Tiny Times III" is a superficial homage to the idea of consumerism, citing the movie as a bad example for the Chinese youth.
Raymond Zhou, a premiere film reviewer and a contributor for China Daily, said: "I have seen 6,000 or 7,000 movies, and this is one of the few that I hate. I was aghast at it."
Zhou compared it with the vampire film "Twilight," only that Guo's masterpiece is shallow. Zhou said that the Hollywood hit has a more interesting plot.
The film critic added that the movie is "totally intolerable." He also cited that its materialism theme is much worse than luxury magazines' advertisements.
