UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor has confirmed a possible appearance at WrestleMania 33. He said in a recent interview that he turned down an offer from the WWE but a better offer could easily change his mind about appearing at the biggest wrestling event of the year.
"Never say never. I know there's been conversations. I know Triple H was at the show (UFC 205). I'd love to go to that WWE and have a real knock. Let one of them have a real knock and see what's what. We'll see. There's conversations ongoing. I've turned down some things, conversations still ongoing," McGregor told FOX Sports.
The brash Irishman took a shot at WWE superstars last year during the promotion of his rematch against Nate Diaz. It caught the attention of the WWE and they have been teasing a possible appearance of the UFC superstar at WrestleMania 33.
According to The Sun, the WWE made an offer to McGregor to appear at WrestleMania in Orlando this April 2 but it was turned down. However, the negotiations are still ongoing and it is possible that Vince McMahon could make an even better offer.
The report noted that the WWE gave Floyd Mayweather Jr. $16 million in 2008 to have a match with Big Show at WrestleMania 24. "Money" held his own against the WWE superstar and he ended up winning the match after hitting a big KO punch with brass knuckles to the giant.
Other celebrities and athletes besides Mayweather who have appeared at WrestleMania include Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Mickey Rourke, Shaquille O'Neal and Ronda Rousey. The WWE entered negotiations with McGregor because he is on hiatus from the UFC.
The 28-year-old MMA superstar took a break from fighting to stay with his girlfriend Dee Devlin, who is pregnant with their first child. However, the WWE are not the only ones looking to make a lot of money from McGregor.
Mayweather has been teasing a boxing match between them for some time now. The dream match between McGregor and Mayweather will surely break records but it's going to take a lot of serious talking rather than trash talk to make it happen.
As for the WWE, they are always willing to make business as long as the price is right. McGregor is the biggest MMA superstar on the planet and he will surely help the WWE in a lot of ways by appearing at the company biggest event of the year.
