It is official. South Korea will play itself in Marvel's "Black Panther," an upcoming American superhero film to be directed by Ryan Coogler.
Some of "Black Panther's" car-chase scenes will be shot in the country's largest port city of Busan. Known for hosting Asia's biggest film festival, Busan will see its landmarks like the Gwangan Bridge, Gwangalli Beach, Marine City and the famous Jagalchi Fish Market used in the upcoming film. The filming will start in late March and last for around two to three weeks.
"The shoot, which will involve some 150 cars and more than 700 people, is a car chase scene with the protagonist and the villain," local production service company Mr. Romance Film said in a press statement obtained by Variety. "It will also involve helicopter(s) and guns (firing blanks) and may cause noise as well as traffic restrictions."
It came to light when the production company sent out a letter to the Busan Film Commission, asking the cooperation of the residents around the filming locations, The Kpop Herald reported. The film's staff members will visit Busan City before this month ends to cement final details of the shoot.
This is not the first time an Avenger has visited South Korea in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The country's capital Seoul and its surrounding province Gyeonggi were used as the backdrop for a big chase scene in 2015's "Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Following the events of "Captain America: Civil War," "Black Panther" follows T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) who returns home as a king of Wakanda after the murder of his father. He, however, finds his sovereignty tested by a menacing adversary in a conflict that has global consequences.
Joining Boseman in "Black Panther" are Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong'o, Daniel Kaluuya, Martin Freeman, Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, and Andy Serkis. The film is set to be released in the United States on Feb. 16, 2018.
