The "Justice League" movie is expected to make up for the failure that was
"Batman V Superman," but could they actually dethrone Marvel Studios and the Avengers?
The latest leaked photos from Games Radar (the company behind Total Film) gives us the first clear look at Cyborg and Aquaman. The photo appears to be a snapshot from a trailer that has yet to be released as of this time.
According to director Zack Snyder: "One of the more rewarding aspects of creating Justice League was having fun exploring the dynamic between this diverse group of characters, inherently larger-than-life characters with disparate backgrounds, ethics and unique perspectives all trying to come together and work as a team," Snyder says.
Snyder hints at a change of tone from the dark and grim "Batman V Superman:"
"It not only offers an opportunity for great drama and complex relationships, but it also often results in great fun. It's an exciting concept to explore and it only gets better when you add the component of our incredibly talented cast - their chemistry really adds to that dynamic."
There are arguments that "Justice League" could be better than the first "Avengers" movie, that scored $ 1.5 billion at the worldwide box office and enthroned Marvel Studios as the premier superhero film outfit.
The key to Justice League being a better movie than the Avengers is to capitalize on the mythology of their characters. The tone has been set in "Batman V Superman" with the "man vs god" narrative. The lines have been drawn and they are very different from the Avengers with their predominantly "human" characters.
Screen Rant had a feature that illustrated the contrast between the Avengers and Justice League heroes.
"No, the kind of personal character drama that fuels the quieter moments of the better Avengers-adjacent films aren't a very good fit for most of the DC heroes (even "normal" human Batman is powered by wealth that's barely more conceivable than The Flash's speed), but the Justice League's members can be used to explore big, operatic themes that even The Mighty Thor would sound a bit out of his depth pondering."
The problem for DC is that Marvel is about to leave its "Earthbound" phase and moving onto the cosmic Phase 3. From "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" which seemed more of an political thriller/action film than a superhero/science fiction piece, they are moving with characters like Doctor Strange and the space-based Captain Marvel.
Thus, the movies that both studios will be churning out will likely be similar, which would be a challenge for DC. "Justice League" will be the catalyst on just how much Warner/DC can compete.
So far, the only trailer for Justice League is this leaked footage from Comic-con, and the leaked picture was not in that video.
