"Emerald City" may be canceled by NBC as it has been facing rating declines week after week. The show, produced by "Mirror, Mirror" director Tarsem Singh and "Snakes on a Plane" writer Josh Friedman, is a modern update on the popular "Wizard of Oz" tale that made Judy Garland a household name in Hollywood's Golden Age.
According to Deadline, "Emerald City" dropped a massive 14 percent to a 0.6 in the key demo of adults 18-49. The number is especially alarming considering that number is a 25 percent drop from its lead-in program "Grimm." The ratings "Emerald City" got places it third in its time slot, signaling a dire outlook for the future of the high budget drama.
Despite this, NBC seems to be not too worried yet as it previously said that the show experiences delayed viewing gains that go up to the high double-digits. So if the show proves to be a success in streaming this spring, there will still be a chance that Emerald City will not be canceled after all.
Critics' cold treatment to "Emerald City" does not help either. In the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, the show has a paltry score of 38 percent. In the show's site page, the critic's consensus reads "Dark and brooding, but also confusing and contrived, Emerald City is the Game of Thrones/Wizard of Oz mashup nobody asked for." In comparison, another series that debuted in the same month, the teen-centric "Archie" adaptation, "Riverdale," scored 87 percent.
It is not that "Emerald City does not have a talented cast. In fact, it has one of the most diverse cast members on television, with a Latina (lead star Adria Arjona) headlining the show. It also has veteran actors Joely Richardson and Vincent D'Onofrio as part of the cast.
"Emerald City" airs every Friday at 9 pm on NBC. Watch the teaser to "Emerald City" season 1 episode 8 in the video below.
