Pi Day is a once-in-a-year date; however, this time, the fun is multiplied because it also marks a once-in-a-century event- all happening today.
Saturday's date is read 3-14-15, the exact first five digits of the constant mathematical value 3.141592653. The best time to celebrate the event has been announced to be 9:26:53 both in the morning and evening. The next time at this event will occur is in March 2115.
"It's a portal into this magical, mysterious world of mathematics," Edward Frenkel, an author and mathematician at the University of California Berkeley. "Pi is special," he adds.
Pi is the mathematical constant used in the calculation of a circle's area; the exact formula being pi times radius squared. It is one of math's basic atomic building block says John Paulos, a mathematician at the Temple University.
In several places, this day is celebrated and represented by the edible counterpart, pie.
"It's a real exciting moment for math enthusiasm. Remember how much fun they found some of the stuff in school," Nathan Kaplan, a math professor at Yale University said.
On the same date, New York's Roosevelt Island runners will take off on a 3.14 mile course at 9:26:53 a.m. exactly, Saturday. They have called the event, "Girls Prep Ultimate Pi Day Pi K," the NYC Runs shared.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will celebrate "Pi Day" by letting prospective students know if they have been admitted, starting at 9:26 am.
March 14 is also a historic date since it is also the birthday of Albert Einstein, the famed physicist.
