"Fast and the Furious" franchise star Michelle Rodriguez has been secretly added in the upcoming "Alita: Battle Angel" from screenwriter James Cameron as the filming wrapped last week. Her cyborg role has been kept a secret all along.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Rodriguez's casting has been kept secret until now in the film adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's Japanese 1990s hit manga "Alita: Battle Angel." Her secret role will be a slim cyborg warrior named Gelda in the comics. She was born on the planet Mars and does not have a whole lot to do with Alita's arc though.
Joining Rodriguez in "Alita: Battle Angel" are the already cast members, namely, "Maze Runner" actress Rosa Salazar (Alita, the title cyborg), "Granite Mountain" actress Jennifer Connelly (in an undisclosed villainous role). "Watchmen" actor Jackie Earle Harley (in an undisclosed role), "Spectre" actor Christopher Waltz (Dr. Dyson Ido), "Deadpool" actor Ed Skrein (villain Zapan), Netflix's "Luke Cage" actor Mahershala Ali (villain Vector) were previously added in the cast, Comic Book reported. "Nashville" actor Keean Johnson will be the cyborg's love interest and teaches her how to play the gladiator style game called Motorball.
"Sin City" helmer Robert Rodriguez is directing "Alita: Battle Angel" alongside Cameron penning the script and producing. His Lightstorm Entertainment long-time partner Jon Landau is also part of the producers.
The live-action movie "Alita: Battle Angel" will be using lots of CGI effects for its backgrounds and cyber body modifications, as well as little touches on the actors' faces and cyber bodies. It is themed with self-discovery and finding true love.
The story of "Alita: Battle Angel" is set in the future, specifically 26th century, wherein a scientist rescues a cyborg girl Alita from a junkyard. He rebuilds her, and later on, they explore her mysterious past since she only had memories of martial-arts training. Along the way, Alita becomes a skilled bounty hunter, tracking and killing criminals.
The 3D movie "Alita: Battle Angel" is expected to be released in cinemas on July 20, 2018, since the production needs more time to work on the film's extensive use of VFX visual effects and green screen.
