AMD is selling the flagship Ryzen 7 1800X CPU for only $499, which for PC gaming enthusiasts scream of bargain price. However, Intel is making a counter offer - the Kaby Lake Core i7-7700K is now only $299.99 or $200 less from the most high-end of the Summit Ridge chips.
No doubt about it, AMD and Intel are about to start an epic price war with the former setting off the showdown by selling the Ryzen 7 chips, all in 8-core/16-thread model, for no more than $500. The sticker price actually starts at $329 for the Ryzen 7 1700 while the Ryzen 7 1700X is ready to fly off the shelf for only $399.
The Ryzen pricing model is seen to undercut Intel's as the closest Core i7 chip is capable of battling with the new AMD CPUs is the 6900K that retails for over $1000.
But it appears that Intel is set to stop whatever momentum AMD has gained so far and its most potent weapon - significant price discounts. The price off now applies across the board and will see Core i7, i5 and i3 chips will lower price points, WCCFTech reported.
Highlighted in the same report are two Kaby Lake processors - the 17-7700K and the i5-7600K - that are priced $299 and $199, respectively, and down by up to $80. Both chips have clock speed of 4.2GHz. A Skylake Core i5-6600K is also on the sale table, asking for only $179 and it's ready to go.
The move by Intel is seen as only the start as the chipmaker is likely to engage AMD in a bruising CPU price war. In a separate report, WCCFTech said Intel is expected to "play dirty" or resort to anti-competitive practices to undercut the AMD Ryzen CPUs.
But it's unclear if the price war will also force Intel to keep its upcoming Skylake-X, Kaby Lake-X and Coffee Lake chips at an affordable level. Doing so will certainly give Intel the upper hand on its looming showdown with AMD, the report added.
And at the end of day, it is the consumers that will emerge the winner in the so-called "Clash of the Titans" that is the Intel-AMD duel. This early, Core i3 chips are on display for as low as $120 that should tempt those eyeing the Ryzen 3 CPU with rumored starting price of $119 to take a second hard look.
