What could have been a flop has become a profitable movie for Constantin Film, the German entertainment movie company that produced “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.”
According to LA Times, on the opening day of “Resident Evil” in China, the film earned $33 million. It was higher than the $26.5 million the movie earned for four weeks of showing in the U.S., data from Artisan Gateway, a film industry consulting company, said.
Movie’s Synopsis
The movie picks up from the events of “Resident Evil: Retribution” when humanity is on its last legs after Wesker betrays Alice in Washington DC. Since she is the only survivor of humanity’s final stand against the undead hordes, Alice must return to Raccoon City where the nightmare started.
At Raccoon City, the Umbrella Corporation is gathering forces to start a final strike against the apocalypse’s only remaining survivors. Alice would race against time and join forces with old friends and an unlikely ally.
After three days of showing in China, the movie’s gross reached $94 million. Its first-day box office even beat the record of “Star Wars: Rogue One” which earned $31 million in China on opening weekend.
Last Installment of Franchise
The movie allegedly is the last installment of the “Resident Evil” film series, based on the video game “Resident Evil.” Distributed by Sony/Screen Gem, the film is an action horror movie directed by Paul W. S. Anderson.
With the box-office result of “Resident Evil,” “xXx: Return of Xander Cage,” went down to second place on its second week of run, while in third place is “Assassin’s Creed.” Fourth was “Sing” and fifth was “La La Land.”
With China’s boost on “Resident Evil’s” earnings, the movie now has an international box office of $212 million so far, according to Box Office Mojo, Dread Central reported.
