"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2" is coming out this year, but there appears to be uncertainty as to James Gunn's involvement in the franchise's future. The director recently revealed that he is not sure what his role will be in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."
In an interview with Complex, Gunn spoke about "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and The Guardians will participate in the "Infinity War" movie.
"It's a very self-enclosed story, so I deal with the Marvel guys every day on where we're going forward, but basically the story GOTG Vol. 2 is about the Guardians and it has no connection to the rest of the Marvel universe," Gunn said about "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" Nevertheless, Gunn teased that the Guardians are going to play an integral part in "Infinity War."
However, fans grew concerned about Gunn's statement regarding his involvement in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3." He said that they are still trying to figure out what to do with the third film. As for him, he's still got to figure out what he wants to do in the next three years of his life.
Many speculated that Gunn may not return to direct the third "GOTG" movie, and instead move on to other pursuits. In a recent statement, Gunn clarified his statement in a separate interview with Yahoo! Movies.
Gunn explained that there are still no clear-cut plans for a third movie, and everything will boil down to how "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will perform. However, he sounded less committed to his participation in the potential third film.
"I would like to make another big movie. So is that Vol. 3 or not? Is that the thing I'd want to do next or not? I don't know, we're talking about it. We're figuring things out. And we'll see where it goes," Gunn stated. He did say, however, that he still has a thousand ideas for where he visualizes the characters and the story would go.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will hit theaters on May 5.
