The official title for the next "X-Men" movie has been revealed and it affirms fans' long-gestating theory. The "X-Men" movie franchise is moving forward with "Dark Phoenix," which centers on Jean Grey and her transition into the said super-powered being.
For a while, the movie was operating under the working title "X-Men: Supernova," but many speculated that the next film will be based on the "Dark Phoenix" storyline, especially after Sophie Turner's Jean Grey manifested strong hidden powers in "X-Men: Apocalypse" that resembles powers connected to the Dark Phoenix.
"I definitely would love to take another stab at the Dark Phoenix story," producer Simon Kinberg told EW about the Dark Phoenix tones in "Apocalypse." "The seeds of Phoenix definitely are planted in [Apocalypse]. She can't control her powers unless she either fully stops them or lets them all loose, and that's kind of Phoenix."
According to Screen Rant, it is rumored that "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" will have a production date of June 2017. Turner is reprising her role as Jean Grey. Another actor who is expected to return to the franchise is James McAvoy.
In an interview, McAvoy said that he would consider returning for another "X-Men" movie if the script is good. "If they offer me a really good part, I'm in! If it's not a really good part... I'll think about it." McAvoy told Fandango. "But I love playing Charles, and I've always had pretty interesting things to do as Charles. So, if that continues, then, yeah, of course I'd love to take part."
There is still no word, however, as to whether Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult will be reprising this role.
"X-Men: Dark Phoenix" is expected to take place sometime in the 1990s. The movie is also rumored to complete the entire "X-Men" movie franchise as it connects the newer "X-Men" movies to the original trilogy in terms of timeline.
Meanwhile, two other "X-Men" movies are coming to the big screen in 2018. Aside from "X-Men: Dark Phoenix." 20th Century Fox revealed that they will be releasing "Deadpool 2" and "New Mutants."
