The eighth franchise of “The Fast and the Furious” broke box-office records over the weekend by crossing the $1-billion mark. In China, “The Fate of the Furious” topped the May Day holiday weekend and broke the record of “The Fast and the Furious 7.”
China Contributes 42% to Movie’s Global Box Office
Deadline Hollywood reported that the Universal movie had earned $1.06 billion globally as of April 30. Of the amount, $192.7 million was domestic receipts, while the remaining $867.6 million was international of which almost 42 percent is from its China showing.
With $361 million or 2.43 billion yuan box office in China, “The Fate of the Furious” relegated to second place a local action film “Shock Wave” which grossed about $23 million or 160 million yuan, China Plus reported. The film, produced by Andy Lau, is the third collaboration between the actor and the movie’s director, Herman Yau.
Andy Lau’s role in “Shock Wave” is a superintendent of an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau. His character used to be the undercover protégé of a wanted criminal who is a bomb expert. After seven years, the knowledge that police officer gained from his former job is put to test when a series of explosions hit the city.
Movie Continues to Rule
Meanwhile, “The Fate of the Furious” has been ruling domestic and global box office for two consecutive weeks. On its third weekend in North America, the movie is expected to remain number 1. It is the fifth movie in the 105-year history of Universal to exceed $1 billion.
The four others are “Jurassic World” which earned $1.67 billion, “Fast and Furious 7” ($1.52 billion), “Minions” ($1.16 billion) and “Jurassic Park” ($1.04 billion). When the movie opened in mid-April, it debuted in 28 territories, including China, Mexico, Argentina, Malaysia, India, Brazil and Indonesia. It has the highest opening weekend in 20 markets.
