All eyes are on two Marvel movies this year-"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and "Thor: Ragnarok"-as both lead up to the highly awaited "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers 4." While "Thor" has always been the more serious film, the latest trailer for "Thor: Ragnarok" drew comparisons to James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy."
The "Thor: Ragnarok" trailer had qualities attributable to "Guardians of the Galaxy"-it had a classic rock song in the background, the visuals were colorful and eye-popping, and the humor in the film was really quirky. It was enough for fans to note that while the trailer was amazing, it had a lot of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" tone in it.
In a recent interview with Heroic Hollywood, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained how Gunn's work has influenced the entire MCU as well as clarify the difference between the two superhero films.
"Well, I think I would say it's, and as people see more of Ragnarok, it's a Taika tone more than a 'Guardians' tone," Feige said about "Thor's" new flavor. He added, however, that although they were starting to scratch the surface and experiment with trippy storylines in "Thor" and "Avengers", it was the success of "Guardians of the Galaxy" has allowed the MCU to become more confident in trying weird and different directions such as in "Doctor Strange" and ultimately "Avengers: Infinity War."
"It was really Guardians and then Strange and now Guardians 2 which is saying, 'Okay, the audience is gonna stay with us on this,'" Feige said. "Why even attempt to make a movie out of the infinity gauntlet if you can't really do a lot of the crazy things that happen in that Jim Starlin imagination."
Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is taking the crown in the box office with $101.2 million in worldwide earnings during its opening week. According to Deadline, the movie's launch is 57% higher than the first film, and 50% bigger than Captain America. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and Bradley Cooper.
"Thor: Ragnarok" will open in theaters on Nov. 3.
