Revised reports said that “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” earned $48 million and not $45.9 million box-office receipts during the weekend opening in China. Almost half of the screens in China showed the Chris Pratt-starrer which explains why the Bollywood film “Dangal” – despite its strong performance in the tills – came in second with $11.5 million weekend box-office results.
High Critic Ratings
Besides the turnout of Chinese moviegoers, the local audience also loved the Marvel and Disney sequel, with ratings of 8.4 and 8.9 out of 10 on online movie platforms Douban and Weying, respectively, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Dangal,” however, got a higher rating of 9.8 on Douban.
Based on the weekend figures, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” appears could topple the $96 million total box-office results in China of the original “Guardians of the Galaxy.” But that would depend if it can hold off the competition when “Power Rangers” of Sony and “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” open in China on Friday.
Only “Shock Wave” Among Local Films Did Well
In spite of being in second place, “Dangal” would likely break another Aamir Khan movie, “PK” which is the present record-holder among Indian movies shown in China with total box-office results of $19.4 million. With Hollywood and Bollywood films dominating China’s box-office, the only Chinese movie with significant earnings in the country is “Shock Wave” which added $6.5 million to its second week of showing, bringing the Hong Kong-Chinese police thriller’s 10-day total to almost $48 million.
In the U.S., “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” earned a weekend box office of $145 million, higher than the $140 million expectations of Disney and Marvel. The movie also beat last week’s box-office winner “The Fate of the Furious,” according to Huffington Post.
