Fox announced on March 18, Wednesday, that "Sleepy Hollow" will be renewed for a third season and will have a total of 18 episodes, despite the drop in ratings in its last season, NY Daily News reported.
While "Sleepy Hollow" may have had experienced a decrease in ratings in 2014, the network's executives promised that the show's third season will have a different vibe than the first two seasons.
Despite speculations that the show will no longer get renewed for a third season, the network's executives believed that the show only needed some changes instead of completely cutting the show from the network.
"We're excited about bringing it back to something that feels a little bit more episodic in nature, that has closure, and doesn't feel quite so serialized," Fox's CEO Dana Walden told TV critics in January.
According to Science Fiction, the first season kicked off with an average of eight million viewers, but the second season only had half, which led critics to believe that "Sleepy Hollow" will no longer get a third season.
Speculations about the show's demise rose when showrunner Mark Goffman decided to resign from his post. Actress Katie Winter even agreed when viewers complained of her character's death in season two.
Now, "Sleepy Hollow" will have a new showrunner. Fox announced that Goffman will be replaced by Clifton Campbell. Campbell previously produced "White Collar" and "The Glades."
The second season ended with the death of Ichabod Crane's wife, Katrina (played by Katia Winter). The network took a big risk by killing her character and they explained that this was necessary in order to pave the way to Ischabod defeating the evil forces.
Fox's executives said that the season finale also allowed the storyline to bring more focus on Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) and Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison).
