Soon you might know if a voice-caller is a Facebook friend--or foe. The social media king is reportedly testing a voice-calling standalone Android app, which has a Dialer ID and Caller ID. The "Phone" app will purportedly display information based on the person's Facebook profile, and also block spam.
The new Facebook app will automatically block certain calls. Those calls originate from numbers that have already been identified as spam.
Facebook has historically been known to use tiny groups of users to test its latest features. However, the leaked image from Android Police includes an "FB-Only" tag that implies the app is undergoing internal tests, according to Mashable.
The fact that the tag is available seems to indicate that the app went live while in its testing stage. If you tap the button you will get a "no page found" message.
A spokesperson from Facebook shared that the largest social media company is "always testing things." Nonetheless, it provided no details about the Phone app.
A few years ago Facebook introduced voice calling to Messenger. It has also been testing the feature on WhatsApp's Android version. Both versions rely on a data connection or Wi-Fi.
It remains to be seen if Facebook's Phone app would certainly be a standalone service, or expand its existing voice call features. However, the leaked photo implies that it would function for all voice calls, regardless of their modes.
It is unknown when Facebook will officially unveil the Phone app, according to Android Police. Still, there is an eyewitness account that it is testing it.
