Hundreds of people took to the streets to protest against the injustice and to demand justice for the brutal death of an Afghan woman who was falsely accused of burning a Quran.
According to The New York Times, Farkhunda, 27, who was known to be a religious scholar, was thrown off a roof, ran over with a vehicle, set on fire, and was then dumped into the Kabul River that was located near one of the capital’s most famous mosques.
Her coffin was carried by female activists who were enraged by what happened. It was also their effort to enforce their defiance against the Afghan tradition of men-only funerals and pallbearers. Around 3,000 men and women of all ages drew banners that had the bloodied face of Farkhunda and marched on the streets of Kabul.
The protestors kept chanting, “Justice for Farkhunda!” and “Death to the killers!”
They want the Afghan Government to prosecute all of those who took part in the unjust killing of the young scholar. The mob attack has been captured on cellphone cameras and the video has gone viral on social media.
Eighteen people, who have confessed to their participation in the killing, were arrested and 13 members of the police force were suspended from office, said Kabul Police Chief, Abdul Rahman Rahimi.
“We are getting fed up,” said Fatana Gailani, the head of the Afghanistan Women’s Council, referring to how her land has been traumatized by war, corruption, and lack of proper leadership, according to The Guardian.
“The new generation has known nothing but war,” she added. “They are not educated, and, now, they have no jobs.”
