One person was killed while several others got severely injured when a series of deadly tornadoes and hailstorm swept through northeast Oklahoma on Wednesday evening. The National Weather Service had issued a warning for Tulsa earlier.
The most badly affected area of the town is a mobile home park where about 20 to 40 homes were damaged badly and some even rolled over, FOX31 reported. In addition to one dead, at least two others are reported to be in critical condition.
Part of a gymnasium also collapsed in Sand Springs, where 60 to 70 people had taken shelter from the deadly winds. No one was reported injured at the spot as everyone hid them in the basement and luckily escaped the tragedy.
The high speed, deadly winds was accompanied by hail storm, which smashed windows and damaged cars lying outside in open. The road ways were also affected badly as several overturned cars littered the freeway. As a result, Interstate 35 through Moore has to be closed.
The tornado was reported to be racing towards Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas. As tornado moved east of Tulsa, it acquired more potential to damage life and property. Baseball-size hail was reported which was as per the warning issued earlier by the agency.
Sgt. Jeremy Lewis confirmed to CNN that another tornado was spotted at about 15 miles south of Moore. "We have about a 2-mile square area with significant damage, mainly roofs off homes and downed trees," said Sgt. Lewis. "All the streets are blocked in that area. It's an older section of Moore with bigger trees down."
