Apple's MacBook and Google's Chromebook are the first wave of devices to adopt USB Type-C ports. They are definitely not the last because the industry is gearing up to launch a slew of storage drives as well as some motherboards with the specific port.
The advantage of using Type-C ports is that they can be used to transfer data at high speeds as well as charge devices. It helps reduce the number of ports on a laptop or other devices as well as save users from the trouble of carrying bulky charging cables during travel.
One of the things that have been annoying consumers for a long time is finding the right side of the USB port. The problem has an answer with Type-C or USB 3.1 ports which can be inserted into the port on either side without difficulty. They can transfer data at 10 gigabytes per second.
LaCie portable drives will be shipping next year with Type-C ports but they will also feature Type-A for older version of Macs and other devices. The drive will be available in 500 GB and 1 TB capacities but an official pricing is yet to be revealed.
A popular storage devices manufacturer SanDisk has announced a flash drive which features both ports, on each side. It can be plugged into USB 3.0 ports as well as the new Type-C port. The drive will have 32 GB of storage space and is expected to ship before the end of 2015, according to PC World.
Desktop computers are not far behind as Asustek has unveiled its wide range of motherboards which features USB Type-C ports. They are priced around $159 to $259 while MSI has announced some new models which are slated for a year end release. It will soon become a mandatory feature on all laptops getting launched in 2016, reported Digital Trends.
