Officer John Moynihan, 34, was in critical condition at Boston Medical Center late Friday after he was shot at point-blank range in the face.
A decorated police officer, Moynihan has been credited with helping to save the life of a transit officer Richard H. Donohue Jr wounded in the Watertown shootout with the Boston Marathon bombers.
The incident began at 6:40 p.m. when police officers who were investigating a report of shots being fired stopped a vehicle on Humboldt Avenue near Crawford Street to question its three male occupants.The suspect stepped out of the and started to flee while opening fire. The suspect wounded Moynihan under the right eye. Gunfire also injured a woman causing a flesh wound in her right arm as stated by Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans to Boston Globe.
Moynihan was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in the face at. The suspect, 41-year-old Angelo West, was shot by officers who returned fire after the shooting started. West also had several gun related charges against him.Commissioner Evans stated that Moynihan is fighting for his life and the department is praying for his speedy recovery.
A brief scuffle broke out at the scene after the incident, when a group began shouting and swearing at police expressing their disapproval of the shooting.
