Trevor Noah, the newly announced host of "The Daily Show" replacing Jon Stewart, rejected the backlash over his tweets which targeted Jews and women. It gave an unfair reflection of him and his style of comedy.
Noah posted on his Twitter account on Tuesday stating that the handful of jokes that ended up being offensive does not reflect his true character and his evolution into a comedian. He used the same account that included the past tweets that had been deemed offensive, according to Boston Herald.
Comedy Central also defended Noah by stating that judging him or his comedy based on a handful of bad jokes is unfair. He is a provocative comedian who does not even spare himself and, he has a bright future with Comedy Central.
Noah has his Twitter account since 2009 and has more than two million followers. He has often posted irreverent statements to reflect his interests in popular culture, global politics and issues of the race. As with many comedians, Noah's jokes can test the boundaries of tolerance by people and society, which in turn get termed as bad jokes that are offensive and insensitive.
Noah came across as mocking or derisive of women, where he is making fun of women who are fat. He has also posted jokes about Jews and about Israel. Reacting to Noah's jokes The Daily Caller's senior editor Jamie Weinstein wrote that his tweet "does seem to suggest that Noah believes Israel is an inherently belligerent country," according to The New York Times.
Noah is the son of black South African mother and white European father is able to speak six languages. He was brought in by Comedy Central to reflect the new age of global multiculturalism. The president of Comedy Central Michele Ganeless stated that he is a citizen of the world.
Stewart unexpectedly announced his decision to leave "The Daily Show" after being the principal voice and representative of the show for 16 years. Stewart's date of departure has not been disclosed. He is expected to depart by the end of the year. Noah will be taking over as soon as he departs from the show.
