A growing number of young students and female participants have reportedly participated in the 35th Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition (BYSCC) held in Beijing on March 29, Sunday.
According to an article on womenofchina.cn, almost 300,000 students joined the competition which aims to give the bright, young minds an opportunity to showcase their talents and tackle social and environmental issues through their inventions.
After the tough elimination round, some 1,859 inventions created by high school students qualified for the next round, the report said.
The article said that many female students also excelled in the once male-domination competition, and their creations include instruments to help tackle pollution such as one that can be used to analyze smog statistics and an electrostatic smog removal device.
According to the report, one of the interesting inventions is the creatively designed loudspeaker presented by Luan Songwei, a junior high school student from the Experimental High School of Beijing Normal University.
The report said that the loudspeaker has the ability to isolate a specific area. This meant that people can hear the music from the loudspeaker from a certain distance, while those within the scope of the speaker would not hear the loud sound.
"It's an issue for the people who don't dance but who live in an area where most people crowd the square dance. Many altercations and conflicts have been caused by this issue, and I've heard some pretty bad stories about these incidents. So, I decided to invent a loudspeaker that could cater to a target group within a certain range of sound," Luan told the press.
Three students from the Huilongguan area in Beijing's Haidian District, who conducted research studies in noise reduction for plaza dancing, said that their research could provide the government with a theoretical platform for social campaigns.
Wang Yudi, a male student from Beijing No.2 Railway Middle School, also presented his robot invention that can purify the air for breathing.
Two students from Beijing Chenjinglun High School also showed their invention: a specially designed window that could separate outdoor smog from the air indoors. Aside from that, the window could also show the outdoor air quality index (AQI, the way by which air pollution is measured) and provide ventilation to the room through a special handle, allowing clean air into the room.
