Due to the increasing global warming and melting of sea ice caps, polar bears are being forced to go to the dry land area.
According to the Observer Reporter, scientists fear that the polar bears will not get enough food on land, as their diet is not habituated to the food they will find on land. Polar bears are accustomed to fatty marine mammals, but will they be able to thrive on land food like berries and bird eggs? The scientists are debating on this subject.
The polar bears need lipid rich diet that seals can provide them, Yahoo News reported. There is also a research paper going on by the U.S. Geological Survey regarding the study of the scenario where polar bears could be forced to live on land, instead of their natural habitat of ice caps.
This paper is aimed at determining the kind of foods that can be stated apt for the polar bears if they are forced to live on the land. The study further reveals that there is a chance that the polar bears might be able to live off the meat which is available on land, but since they are used to doing all the hunting on slippery ice caps and frozen water, they might not be able to do all the running and sharp running which is required to catch the preys on land, like tigers do.
The researchers also fear that the population of polar bears is already nearing its low numbers of endangering and melting of the snow caps might make them edge towards extinction.
There has been a suggestion about taking all the polar bears (which are currently divided into three regions) to be made to live in an artificially created natural habitat.
