The United States of America has been at war with the terrorist group called Islamic State which is also known as ISIS or ISIL. The public knows that this group hurts people and they really are terrorists that kill people.
The need for clarification regarding its actual identity however needs to be disclosed. Are they a paramilitary organization? Is ISIS going to be the next iteration of the al-Qaeda in Iraq?
Clarity is needed at this point. Charles Lister of the Brookings Institution is launching his latest book, "The Islamic State: A Brief Introduction." This book discloses a deeper look at the group beginning from its roots, its goals, and practices.
Salon.com has talked to Lister over a phone interviews to know more about his book. Report says that according to Lister, ISIS is a transnational terrorist organization. However, there are times that the group presented itself as a Sunni nationalist movement, an organization in Syria and Iraq. To that effect, the ISIS group has presented itself as a protector in contrast with repression from identified enemies to Sunni Islam.
Lister explained in his book that ISIS is indeed fundamentally are a terrorist organization. If to look deeper into its structure, their operations, and their goals are that of a terrorist group. Locally the group has more potential to reach out for support, while internationally, ISIS presents itself as an apocalyptic international Jihadist group where it recruits fighters to join its cause, MSN News reported.
Lister is a very experienced journalist who has many years of experience of living in the Middle East.
