Workers restore the southern barbican entrance to Wanquan Castle in Wanquan County, north China's Hebei Province, April 6, 2015. Wanquan Castle, which was built in 1393, is a well-preserved military castle of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
Known as "Wucheng" or "Martial City" for its impenetrable reputation at the height of its glory, the old military base in Zhangjiakou measures two kilometers in circumference and is protected by a 12-meter wall. This Ming Dynasty fortress, built in 1393, successfully prevented infiltration of invading troups. In fact, battle plans were laid out to take advantage of the castle's structural durability.
Aside from restoring the Wanquan Castle, the project will also revive the commercial districts of the Qing and Ming era, as well as other notable structures like the Great Wall Martial Museum, the Red Tourist Route, the Golden Harvest Academy, and performance theaters. Reconstruction work is slated to be completed in 2016.
