A woman from the United States was already charged with 20 years of being behind bars after she killed her five-year-old son using salt in order to gain popularity from the internet.
The woman identified as 27-year-old Lacey Spears, born in Kentucky but lived in New York at the time of the incident, placed the sault in the feeding tube of her son named Garnett. Garnett's food had to pass through a tube since infancy because Spears claims that he could not chew his food down.
Spears was supposedly to be charged with 25 years of imprisonment but the judge ruled that since she suffered from a rare mental disorder called Munchausen by proxy syndrome, she was sentenced for only 20 years. The mental disorder is when parents sicken their child in order to gain attention from the situation of the kid.
Assistant district attorney Doreen Lloyd said in a statement that Spears continued to use salt in order to portray that her son was sick to suffice her need for attention. Spears also defended herself saying that Garnett suffered from Crohn's disease and Celiac disease.
Garnett died just last year after he was admitted at the Westchester Medical Centre when medical officials said that Garnett was brought in because of seizures. The doctors pointed out that the sodium levels of the boy were very high.
He was initially treated for gastrointestinal symptoms due to the salt that Spears fed him, as reported by BBC. Spears also placed salt while at the hospital twice when she took her son to the bathroom. Spears also took it to her social networking site to post photos of her son while he was dying.
The defense once tried to blame the hospital for the death of the child saying that Garnett was dehydrated while being taken care of by the hospital as reported by Fox News.
