Apple's new 12-inch minimalist MacBook now supports third-party USB Type-C cables, giving users a cheaper option instead of the company's $29 two-meter cable.

The Cupertino company said that users of the new MacBook will be able to purchase the significantly less expensive USB Type-C cables and chargers. Previous MacBook models only supported Apple's MagSafe chargers.

Apple decided to ditch the traditional ports on its new MacBook, and replaced them with just one USB Type-C port. Initially, the iPhone maker's decision garnered mixed reactions from both Apple fans and tech enthusiasts.

Some said that the USB Type-C port was indeed faster and was an upgrade from the traditional USB 2.0 standard that is still used in most laptops today. USB-C is as fast as the data speeds of USB 3.0.

However, some have also said that it was another one of Apple's money making scheme since the cables and chargers would be bought from the company.

MacBook users will be glad to know that they will be able to use other USB-C cables and chargers besides those manufactured by Apple, according to their updated support page.

In addition, the new 12-inch MacBook will be able to use Ethernet using the new USB-C port. It is not particularly a new move from Apple as previous USB ports also supported third-party cables.

There are already a number of devices lined up with USB Type-C support such as SanDisk and Emtec flash drives, and an external storage device from Lacie, which has a track record of making peripherals for Apple devices, according to PC World.

USB Type-C cables are particularly useful because it allows the new MacBook to be hooked to DisplayPort and HDMI monitors and it is also backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports via adapters.

MacBook owners can purchase third-party USB-C cables from Amazon, Belkin and Monoprice. Apple also sells a USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter for $79, a power adapter for $49 and a USB-C to USB adapter for $19.
