Body-mass index is a person's weight to height ratio. It is used all over America in order to determine a person's overall fitness or assess their health risks. Despite reports claiming of its inconsistency, the BMI is used all over the globe with disturbing regularity.
Recently, the French National Assembly imposed a ban on hiring models that has a BMI score lesser that 18. This means that a model standing 5-foot-8-inches will fall below the cutoff weight of 118 pounds but will be allowed in the catwalk if they weigh 119 pounds.
In Belton, Missouri, a parent was outraged when the school on which her 7-year-old daughter go to tag her child overweight based the BMI scale, according to ABC News. The child weighs 53 pounds and stands 3-foot-10 and scored 17.9 on the BMI scale which made her overweight if the scale is to be followed.
Based on the BMI scale, a person is considered underweight if they score 18.5 and below. A person is considered overweight if they score 24.9 and above. Scoring 30 on the scale means obesity and extreme obesity starts at the score of 40.
Following this scale, a 5-foot-10 person weighing 130 pounds is considered underweight. The same person weighing 175 pounds is overweight, 210 pounds will make the person obese and will be tagged extremely obese at 275 pounds or above.
