Comcast recently announced that it will offer its fastest internet service to residential customers around South Florida. It is reported that it can deliver speeds of up to 2 gigabyte-per-second.
The service known as Gigabit Pro will be offered in Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Broward counties, according to CBS Miami. Jacksonville will subsequently receive the same Internet service.
Comcast advertised that its Gigabit Pro service can reach speeds of up to 2 gigabit-per-second. At this speed, a regular high-definition movie can be downloaded in 12 seconds.
Comcast regional vice president Amy Smith said in a statement, "The Internet is constantly evolving and broadband is truly a platform for innovation. Gigabit Pro makes it possible to deliver a level of speed directly to homes that was simply not possible before."
Comcast has yet to announce the price and installation cost for its high-speed internet service, according to Miami Herald. The company plans to release these figures next month. The company added that the installation cost will be added since a fiber optic cable will be installed from the customer's residence to the nearest fiber optic node.
The Gigabit Pro, which uses fiber optics, is a symmetrical service which means that download and upload speed will be the same. Comcast said that it also plans to release the Gigabit Pro through its XFINITY program in order to reach multi-dwelling units such as large apartment complexes.
Customers who wants to avail of the service must be located close to Comcast's fiber optic network. Additionally, professional-grade equipment will be used for the installation in order to achieve the 2 gigabit-per-second speed.
South Florida is the third market to receive Comcast's high-speed internet service, the first two being Atlanta and California.
