Rapper Vanilla Ice recently weighed in on the recent controversy involving Adam Sandler's "Ridiculous 6" comedy, after several Native American actors reportedly ditched its set.
Vanilla Ice, who has been tapped to play the role of Mark Twain, released an official statement during his recent interview with The Guardian.
"It's a comedy," Vanilla Ice said. "I don't anybody really had any ill feeling or any intent or anything. This movie isn't 'Dances With Wolves.' It's a comedy.
"They're not there to showcase anything about anybody," the rapper added. "They're just making a funny movie, I think. I don't have anything to do with it. I just play my part."
Last week, a group of Native Americans hired to play minor roles in the film left the set in protest, claiming that "Ridiculous 6" perpetuated old-age stereotypes about their culture.
Following the controversy, one Navajo actress who also left the set explained why they did so.
According to her, "Ridiculous 6" will just continue to popularize the notion that Native Americans are still just "Hollywood Indians."
"This is supposed to be a comedy that makes you laugh," Allison Young said during a recent interview with MSNBC. "A film like this should not make someone eel this way. Nothing has changed. We are still just Hollywood Indians."
Meanwhile, Netflix defended Sandler and his upcoming comedy and said that the movie wasn't to be taken seriously.
According to the network, "Ridiculous 6" is called as such for a reason. The film was created as a combination of various Western movies and the stereotypes they have perpetuated over the years.
Additionally, Netflix noted that the cast of "Ridiculous 6" are not the subjects of the jokes, rather, they are the ones in on the jokes.
Sandler's upcoming comedy serves as the first among his four-picture deal with Netflix.
