Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter apparently is not a supporter of female superhero movies. The revelation comes when an email exchange between Sony and Marvel honchos got leaked out in public in which he elaborated how other female superhero movies have been a disaster.
The message was sent from Perlmutter to Sony executive Michael Lynton listing female superhero films that were not successful. The email was exchanged in August 2014. The exact context in which the email was sent is still known but it is quite apparent that Perlmutter was enumerating the films as a proof how female superhero movies bomb badly at the box office. Read the leaked email here.
Perlmutter raised fingers at "Electra," "Catwoman" and "Supergirl" in the email to claim that all the three movies did not earn much financial gain. Many online commentators and bloggers have slammed the CEO for his mentality of thinking that the female-centric movies fail due to the gender of the protagonist.
Indiewire accused Perlmutter for picking out wrong examples of female superhero movies saying that the mentioned flicks were panned by critics too and cannot be the face of any genre of movies.
Despite such strong opposition for female superhero movies, Marvel is set to release its first such flick, "Captain Marvel," in 2018. Sony also announced last year that they were planning to create a movie based on unnamed woman character from the Spider-Man universe, TIME reported.
Yet the leak of the controversial email has further fuelled the accusations of sexism against Marvel. Fans are still mourning over the company's decision to not include Wasp, a female founding member of the "Avengers," from both the franchisee films and the upcoming "Ant-Man" movie.
