Volkswagen announced that it will be launching a new Apple Watch app that will allow users a host of functionalities right from their wrist itself. The app will enable users to check whether the door and windows are locked or unlocked.
The app will also be handy in locating the car in a parking lot and to even unlock the door when you approach the car. That is not all as the user will also be able to make the car honk and/or flash its lights to help locate the car, all via the app from the Apple iWatch itself.
One of the features in the Apple Watch app is that it allows the user to set speed and boundary limits, breaching either of which will be setting off alarms. This no doubt will prove to be an additional aid for parents to keep an eye on their wards, stated TechCrunch. Another useful feature that the app will enable users to keep a tab on the amount of fuel or charge they have on their cars, along with the distance they can travel before requiring a top up. This is applicable to cars running on diesel, gasoline or even battery power.
Volkswagen stated the new app will be compatible with select versions of 2014 model cars as well as the later models of Beetle, CC, Eos, Jetta, Passat and Tiguan. Compatibility of the app will be built in with all 2015 models which include the likes of Golf, Golf GTI, Golf R, Golf SportWagen and e-Golf models.
According to Mashable, the new app will be in addition to the auto major's Car-Net service currently available on the iPhone.
Worth mentioning, this marks the beginning of a new trend with car makers making use of the smartwatch to offer a more personalised set of features that so far was limited to their smartphones. Porsche too has a similar app - Porsche Car Connect - available on the iOS.
