BitTorrent finally released its own chat service called Bleep, which is an encrypted peer-to-peer chat app that is well regarded for its security and privacy protocols. The app is compatible with Android, iOS, Mac and Windows platform.
Bleep was formerly known as BitTorrent Chat and was first released in July 2014 in private alpha phase. The app was released in public alpha phase in September 2014 on the Android, OS X, Windows 7 and Windows 8 platform. Since its public alpha release, the app has been updated several times in order to make sure that it can deliver a secure channel for confidential conversation.
BitTorrent senior director of product development Farid Fadaie confirmed that Bleep will skip the beta phase and will be released in the iOS platform as well.
With its recent public release, BitTorrent added a new whisper feature for both desktop and mobile version of the app. Whisper let users send transient messages to other users which the system will then automatically delete within 25 seconds after it was viewed, according to The Verge.
In order to ensure that user messages cannot be hacked, BitTorrent programmed the app so that messages as well as encryption keys will be stored in the user's local hard drive and in the company's server. This means that Bleep uses a decentralized system wherein no servers are needed in order to temporarily store user information and messages.
To add another layer of privacy to the service, Bleep will not require any personal information from users when they sign up. All that is required is a nickname when signing up.
Bleep also offers free voice call to any added contact. Calls are directly connected through cloud connection with end-to-end encryption in order to make sure nobody can tap in.
According to Venture Beat, Bleep has been downloaded more than 200,000 times since its alpha launch. It can be downloaded at bleep.pm or at the platforms respective app stores.
