Panasonic has officially entered the world of smart televisions powered by a reliable and user friendly operating system. The initial batch of HD televisions powered by the Firefox operating system has been launched in Europe.
Mozilla has collaborated with multiple manufacturers including Panasonic which was announced during their conference at the Mobile World Congress 2014. There was a long break before they officially launched their first Firefox phones. The smartphones have a tough competition in the market against iOS, Android and Windows Phone but the television scenario is much easier to get into.
According to PC Mag, Panasonic has launched six different models in Europe, each with a different screen size and specification. The televisions are powered by the HTML 5 plugin which makes it easier for users to browse the web and access a wide range of apps that are already compatible with the Mozilla Firefox browser.
With the operating system, users will be able to customize the interface and the content which seamlessly supports other apps, websites and streaming content from other devices such as smartphones and tablets.
"Being on Firefox OS will allow users to stay connected to the web at all times and also get their favorite content on their television without difficulty. They no longer have to rely on a brand or an app ecosystem but access everything they like," said Mozilla's chief technical officer, as reported by Tech Times.
Users will have the freedom to choose and download any necessary apps from the market place while the Firefox OS on Panasonic televisions come pre-loaded with many applications including popular ones like Netflix and Youtube. The OS also facilitates users to pin their favorite ones and is designed for easy navigation on the big screen. The price of the television starts at $1,000 approximately.
