Dr Garth Webb, a Canadian optometrist, claims that he has developed Bionic Lens that would help people see three times better than 20/20 vision.
Dr. Webb said that the lenses, once fitted, would replace contacts and glasses while preventing the eyes from developing cataracts. A cataract is normally the result of a natural aging process.
The surgery to implant the lens into the eye of a patient takes just eight minutes. It involves folding the Bionic lens into a syringe filled with saline and placing it in the eye. The Bionic Lens takes 10 seconds to unravel.
Webb said that if people can just hardly see the clock at 10 feet, when they get the Bionic Lens they can see the clock at 30 feet away.
The lenses are made out of an inert substance that do not lead to biophysical changes within the eye. Webb from British Columbia said that the arrangements for clinical trials on blind patients and animals were already underway. He hopes that the product will become commercially available within two years, Time reported.
Dr. Vincent DeLuise from Yale University believes that Bionic Lens will bring people nearer to the holy grail of excellent vision at all ranges - near, intermediate and distant.
The tech giant Google is also working on smart lenses that contain an image capture component, an image sensor and a control circuit, according to Daily Mail. The system can be linked wirelessly to a phone to issue commands via audio and for data access.
