"A Beautiful Mind" actor Russell Crowe took to Twitter to give his reaction to the recent death of Nobel laureate John F. Nash Jr., 86, whose life was the inspiration of the Academy Award-winning 2001 film.
"Stunned...my heart goes out to John & Alicia & family. An amazing partnership. Beautiful minds, beautiful hearts," Crowe tweeted.
On May 23, Nash Jr. and wife Alicia Nash, 82, were killed after the drive of taxi they were in lost control and hit another car and a guardrail on the New Jersey Turnpike in Monroe Township, Sgt. Gregory Williams of the News Jersey State Police said, New York Times reported.
According to the police, it was likely that the couple, who were pronounced dead at the scene after they were ejected from the taxi, were not wearing seatbelts. On the other hand, the taxi driver and the driver of the other car had nonlife-threatening injuries.
A resident of Princeton Junction, N.J., Nash Jr. is known for revolutionizing the mathematical field of game theory and his mind was said to be highly original but deeply troubled, according to Washington Post.
A Nobel Prize-winning mathematician, Nash Jr.'s descent into mental illness and recovery from it inspired the film "A Beautiful Mind," which was directed by Ron Howard. The film won for Oscars including Best Picture, Howard for Best Director, Akiva Goldsman for Best Screenplay, and Jennifer Connelly for Best Supporting Actress for playing Nash. Jr.'s wife.
Crowe, who played Nash Jr., was nominated for Best Actor along with "Ali" actor Will Smith, "I Am Sam" actor Sean Penn, "In The Bedroom" actor Tom Wilkinson but they all lost to "Training Day" actor Denzel Washington.
