Elderly men were warned in a new study to be careful when consuming more than two drinks, as it can lead to a cardio toxic effect in the body.
The study conducted by Professor Scott Solomon of the Harvard Medical School, revealed that elderly individuals are at risk of poisoning the heart through the excessive consumption of liquor.
Solomon who led the study told TIME that although a little alcohol may be beneficial; too much can become toxic.
He told the publication that the study revealed a cut-off point of two drinks a day, especially in men the study exhibited signs of subtle effects of cardio toxicity if drinking exceeded that threshold.
Solomon claimed over a prolonged period of time the toxicity caused by the alcohol can lead to health problems in the future.
Further he pointed out that the susceptibility for women in the study revealed that the threshold of two drinks was much lower than their male counterparts.
The study featured in the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, revealed that a little more than one drink can begin to induce cardio toxins in women.
In the study, the researchers filed through data retrieved from more than 4000 elderly individuals averaging 76 in age, from information regarding habits of alcohol consumption. The volunteers agreed to undergo echo cardiograms for the purpose the stud claimed.
Furthermore, the research revealed that the more alcohol was consumed the more the heart began showing abnormalities. In men, more than two drinks a day or in terms of a week 14 drinks is the cut off point, beyond that the heart begins to display subtle changes.
The alarming statistic which the study revealed is that in women changes began to show in those who consumed a little more than one drink a day. The researchers also found that heart functions began to lessen in the women who drank more often.
