A swordfish killed a captain of the boat by stabbing him in the chest with its bill in Hawaii.
A 47-year-old boat captain named Randy Llanes lost his life on Friday while he was using his spear gun to kill and catch a swordfish stated the Hawaii Police Department, according to a report by CNN.
On Friday morning, Llanes got into the water at Honokohau Harbor after he saw a swordfish. He wanted the catch the broadbill swordfish.
Lt. William Souther stated the when Llanes fired the spear and got the fish, it "thrashed about, leaving a puncture wound to his upper chest."
Kona Patrol's Sgt. David Matsushima said told KHON2 that fish came back after it got "wrapped around a mooring anchor. The fish swam at Llanes and stabbed him.
The police was informed at 10:48 am and an employee of Hawaii County Fire Department arrived at the scene and performed CPR. Later, Llanes was taken to Kona Community Hospital, however at 11:30 am, he was declared dead.
The swordfish was 6 feet long including the bill length and it weighed close to 40 pounds. Dave Leverone, Llanes' friend said that he was a noted fisherman and has been fishing for a very long time. He added that he was a man with good attitude and used to help others. Llanes' friend also mentioned that he has a 5-year-old son and the harbour is in shock after his death.
Swordfish are known to be fast and ferocious and they use their bills to injure or kill the prey.
