Disney is working on a sequel of its live-action film "Maleficent" with Angelina Jolie expected to reprise her titular role.
According to Cinema Blend, Jolie has not officially signed for the film sequel, but Disney is self-assured that the actress will return in "Maleficent 2" as it will not materialize if she, who popularized the titular character in the big screen, is removed.
Linda Woolverton is currently in talks to pen the screenplay with the assumption that Jolie will return in the sequel of the live-action fantasy film, as per The Wrap. Joe Roth will also return as the producer of the follow-up film while there is no word if filmmaker Robert Stromberg will direct the sequel.
As opposed to what fans used to know about Maleficent in story books, Disney's take on its live-action "Maleficent" has changed people's perspective on the bewitching creature. Stromberg's "Maleficent" showed the titular character as a kind-hearted fairy who became evil after being disdained by her friend Stephen.
Released by Buena Vista on May 30, 2014, "Maleficent" made an estimated gross of $69 million in the United States on its opening weekend. As of now, the fantasy film has made an estimated domestic gross of $241 million and an estimated worldwide gross of $517 million.
"Maleficent" starred Jolie, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Stauton, Juno Temple, Lesley Manville, Brenton Thwaites, and Miranda Richardson, among others. At this point, there is no information yet on the cast, who will return in the sequel, the film plot, and the release date.
