The Old Town of Pingyao in Shanxi Province is an outstanding example of ancient China's architectural success. The town is known for its well-preseved walls, with gates positioned to imitate the head and legs of a turtle, giving it the moniker the "Turtle City."
In its peak during the Qing Dynasty, Pingyao became a celebrated financial center, just as how the Wall Street is known today.
Despite being antiquated, Pingyao's dwelling and buildings--all reminiscent of the Han architecture--remain sturdy and protective of the occasional sandstorm.
The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major tourist attraction in China.
