While waiting for the actual Google Nexus 2015 release date, Android fans can get a taste of what the handset would be in a Samsung setting. Simply install the Material Design-inspired smartphone theme that debuted this week.
Designer Samer Zayer juts released his Material theme for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge and is readily available for download at Samsung's Theme Store. Note that the app is classified under Themes for Man to quickly find it.
Zayer's creation offers a near-experience of what the Nexus 2015 would be if made by Samsung though the rendering is far from Android M, which is the next Google mobile operating system to unbox with its signature phone this year. Material, according to Android Police, effectively buries TouchWiz elements so users can appreciate the Samsung flagship with the native Android Lollipop environment.
Once Material is installed and applied, the S6 and S6 Edge will get "a fresh coat of pretty paint," of Material Design, Android Police said, adding that pure Android will envelope the Samsung flagship "everything from the wallpaper to the lock screen, icons, settings, notification area, app launcher, dialer, calculator, clock and messaging."
The blog report took a number of screenshots to prove its point.
Gadget reviewer Marques Brownlee had a test drive with the theme and concluded that Material is the closest that Android fans can get to a Nexus-like flagship phone. In his latest YouTube clip, Brownlee described the theme render as "hybrid and unique," though definitely a big deal for device users wanting the more cleaner look and functions that only a pure Android can deliver.
Brownlee noted too that Material might have completely transformed the S6 into a near-Nexus device but was prevented only by copyright issues. As a result, some elements like icons will not be in native Android coating.
But there is a simple workaround, according to Brownlee. Users can easily ditch the stock Samsung applications and get the Android counterparts by downloading from the Google Play Store. So getting Zayer's Material theme to work with native Android apps, Samsung and Android fans can now enjoy a glimpse of what likely the Google Nexus 2015 would be.
Yet as always the case, the real thing is still the best adding the fact that Android M will be among the headliners of the Nexus 2015 release date. And Google will reportedly make this happen between September and October this year.
